Everyone likes a Gourmet Beef Burger! Whether it be a beef, lamb, fish, vegetarian, vegan or anything else, the idea of a top quality, home-made burger fills us with joy.
Whether it be a Kobi beef, pancetta and quail egg burger in a good restaurant or a great quality homemade minced beef burger in a cafe / deli – the secret is outlined in this article.
A gourmet burger can be used for anything you like, lunch, dinner with home-made fries, gourmet canapés, midnight snack or relaxing barbecue with friends. Whatever the occasion a great quality, gourmet burger will be an awesome fit!
Gourmet Beef Burger
- 1kg Diced/Minced Beef
- 200g Good Quality Beef Sausages
- 50ml Tomato Ketchup
- 20ml Wostershire Sauce
- 20ml Barbecue Sauce
- 3 tbsp Olive Oil
- 2 Large Free Range Eggs
- 1 tsp Sea Salt
- Crack Black Pepper
- 2 tbsp Onion Powder
- I recommend using lean, free range beef from a local butcher shop for your Gourmet Beef Burger. If you have a mincer then buy a whole joint, dice and then mince it yourself. This way you know exactly what is in your burger mince. However, time and budget constraints might mean that you have to buy ground beef mince. This is fine but please make sure you get it from a quality local butcher rather than a big chain of supermarkets. Put the ground beef in a mixing bowl.
- Cut the beef sausages lengthways and remove the sausage meat, discard the skin and add the sausage meat to the ground beef for your Gourmet Beef Burger. Once again, if possible PLEASE get the sausages from your local butcher rather than a supermarket. The butcher will make them on the premises and they are usually a far superior product.
- To the minced beef and sausage meat add the tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, bbq sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder and olive oil.
- Crack the eggs INTO ANOTHER BOWL – this is to ensure that no shell gets cracked into the mixture by mistake. Check to make sure that there is no shell in your egg, and add it to the mixture.
- NOW THE FUN PART! Get your clean hands into the mixture and start mixing the Gourmet Beef Burger up. Feel it squelching and squeezing between your fingers. Do this for a few minutes until it is thoroughly mixed up.
- Now you are ready to shape into burger patties. A good way of keeping consistency is to pack it into a ladle (if you have a ladle the correct size. But you can probably do it by eye, it’s easy to do.
- Once you have your patties ready you are ready to cook. Use a bbq, grill pan or a frying pan and give them a good colour on both sides. TIP – If you made your own mince or you are SURE that your butchers mince is the best quality then you can cook your burger like a steak – rare, medium rare, medium and so on… NOTE – if you bought supermarket mince DO NOT cook it pink, simply cook it right through.
- Once cooked and nicely char-grilled on the outside you are ready to serve. Serve it on a good quality bun from your local bakery. Lightly toast the bun, spread butter or margarine on the bun (most people miss this step, but please don’t).
- Now you are free to add whatever toppings you want. Bacon, cheese, fried egg, avocado, salsa, blue cheese, chili … the list goes on and on… but most importantly ENJOY WITH FRIENDS AND/OR FAMILY.
The burger above is only a base for a gourmet burger. However, delicious on its own, it is easily customisable for your exact tastes.
If you like spice why not add some fresh chilli or Cajun seasoning?
Add some fresh “fines herbs” from the garden – parsley, thyme, sage, coriander?
If you don’t mind the extra calories why not add some crumbled feta or goat’s cheese?
If you are going to the trouble of making a gourmet burger then it is essential that you get the best raw ingredients that you can. Meat from the butcher, bread rolls from the baker rather than processed white rubbish from the supermarket. This burger is not only lower in fat but also lower in disgusting chemicals that should never be in food in the first place.
